GENERATING IDEAS (P1,M1,U12)
CLIENT BRIEF INTERPRETATION
I have been approached by CineCloud Pictures to pitch my ideas for producing a new online and print based film magazine for North London. The client has made it explicit that the magazine should be North London based however does not expose what specific areas within, and should also promote new independent films to help gain more engagement with independent films and film-makers. I will need to focus on referencing a current and new streaming platform such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, current streaming platforms and FilmRS, a new streaming platform (explicit). I have inferred that the magazine requires local distribution initially to grow and develop the magazine and i will find strategies to distribute the online and print versions of the magazine, Cinecloud Pictures also encourages ideas for wider mass distribution therefore they are open to marketing schemes that i will create to distribute the magazines to a wider mass of users (explicit and implicit). The brief also implies that i will need to promote the magazine at popular film festivals such as BFI London Film Festival to gain success for the future for the magazine (implicit and open). i have also inferred from the brief that i am required to make sample pages from the first edition of the magazine, to showcase new film, independent company and streaming service, i will complete this via photoshop to convey my visual ideas (explicit and open).
3 KEY IDEAS
I have a range of potential ideas for a new North London film magazine. My first idea is a genre based magazine which will focus on rom-com, the magazine will be distributed throughout North London every two months. I think this would be successful as the magazine won't be repetitive as there will be new films promoted depending on release dates and there will be new, exciting content for each edition to maintain and collect subscribers and readers as the magazine hopefully interest the target audience, for example, an edition will explore the popularity of Rom-Com films in the mainstream and indie film category, with content including new films on the scene to help promote smaller film directors and the promotion of blockbuster rom-com films and more. My next potential idea is an director based magazine, which will be distributed monthly to promote up and coming directors in the film scene. The content of the magazine will incorporate an in depth insight into director's lives and their career journey's portrayed through autobiographical articles and thorough interviews, the directors will both be indie and mainstream directors to support small creators as well as established directors. My final potential idea is a magazine based on film festivals which will be distributed every two months. Within the magazine, the content will include information on London based film festivals and the type of activities that will occur during the film festival to give readers and insight into film festivals if they are unsure, there will also be information about worldwide film festivals contrasted with London based film festivals.
IDEA 1: GENRE BASED
My first potential idea i have for a new North London based film magazine is a genre based magazine, a vital part of the film industry. The idea focuses on expanding viewers knowledge about various genres for example one of the editions which will be distributed every two months will be a romantic comedy based magazine to educate and entertain readers about different rom-com films, mainstream and indie to promote all creators. Different views and perspectives from a variety of journalists and reviews from romantic comedy enthusiasts will also be included, this will hopefully act as entertainment for the readers to engage the target audience, being teenagers and upwards specifically women as my primary audience and men and others interested as my secondary audience. I am planning on having the colours of the magazine and house style represent the genre that the edition is focusing on to visually entice readers especially the younger audience as i feel they will respond better to a more visually impressive style than dark, for example the colours for the rom-com magazine will mainly be pinks, whites and reds. I also plan to have a double page spread about a specific rom-com film with reviews and articles attached to catch the eye. The magazine will have 30-50 pages to ensure all the content is able to be featured to provide the maximum enjoyment for the readers. As my target audience is a wide variety to young and older the price would need to be reasonable therefore i established £2.50 would be a suitable and attainable price for a physical copy and a subscription of the online version for £50 a year.
Key Idea 3 | |
STRENGTHS | WEAKNESSES |
This idea has scope for many monthly editions | there are not many pages therefore they will be small editions |
The brief states the magazine needs to be promoted at film festivals and this will open an opportunity to as i will be in close contact with various film festivals | quite a niche target market, will not appeal to everyone- minimal readers |
There are many London film festivals therefore there will be a lot of content | It can become out of date after the film festivals are over |
