PLANNING AND PREPARING A PITCH (P3: M2 U21)

There was a technical issue with my pitch and therefore I am unable to imbed this onto my blog. Here is the feedback I received:

Strengths

  • - Magazine title is clearly thought out- you explained the connotations alongside the colour palette

  • -You effectively the purpose with the theme and genre of the magazine

  • - Your rationale for the target audience is clear (JUST REVIEW TO ENSURE YOU DO NOT ALIENATE A POTENTIALLY WIDER AUDIENCE BY BEING GENDER SPECIFIC ABOUT THE APPEAL TO WOMEN)

  • - YOU DO ARGUE FOR ITS USP EFFECTIVELY HOWEVER

  • - Your pricing and incentives for subscriptions are well considered

  • - Carefully developed ideas for content

  • - Excellent to focus as you do on geodemographic as part of the target audience breakdown

  • - Effective and creative mood board and font styles which match the overall idea and genre

  • - Well done on auditing your costs in the budget- it is comprehensive

  • - You explain why possible competition is not a threat and identify your magazine’s USP

Improvements/ additions

  • - Your pitch is missing the sketched layout of your DPS

  • - Although the ideas in the presentation are very well thought out and therefore relevant, aim to have less text on each slide so you present rather than read. Using cue cards will help you do this.

potential client questions:

How will you specifically target North London?

My strategy towards specifically targeting North London is by exclusively showing that the magazine is a North London based magazine on the front page of the magazine, i will have a coverline dedicated to this to convey to the readers where the magazine originated from and where they can buy it- especially on the online version of the magazine if online readers are interested in the physical copy therefore they aware that the magazine will be distributed in North London stores and newsagents. I will also specifically target North London by promoting the magazine on local reader groups and film enthusiast groups to hopefully make people aware of the magazine within certain areas and North London as a whole.

How will you ensure you are promoting independent films consistently?

It is one of the main purposes of the magazine to promote new indie film releases, i will ensure i am promoting them by conducting interviews with indie film directors and actors acting for the content to understand their journey and gain a grasp of the indie film industry and films to help get their name and movies out there. I will also ensure to make any new independent film releases the primary focus of the magazine as this will therefore expose readers to films other than blockbuster films which will widen their knowledge as well as promote the indie films. Even if one of the magazine editions are focalised around a blockbuster film in the far future once the magazine becomes national, i will always guarantee there will be independent films advertised in every edition to consistently promote the independent film scene therefore one of the main purposes of the magazine is not altered.

How will your double page spread captivate your readers?

My double page spread will invite readers in initially with vibrant and pigmented colours from a background to do with the featured film on the front page to catch the eye which will hopefully make the readers stop and want to read the double page spread and the content within. The double page spread i will have interesting articles from film critics about the film featured to allow the readers to gain an insight into different perspectives and opinions which will hopefully captivate the readers and expand their comprehension of the film. Within the double page spread there will further be a QR code that will lead the readers to an interview with actors or directors from the film in question to accomodate for the more visual and younger readers.

Will there only be one film throughout the magazine or multiple?

There will be a primary film which will be featured on the front page and the double page spread to maintain a sense of familiarity and consistency throughout the magazine, however that will not be the only rom-com film included- there will be secondary films focalised within the magazine through columns by film critics and journalists to ensure that the content is not repetitive or boring, this will hopefully gain and maintain readers and consumers as there is a range of content in each edition.

What will be your main marketing strategies?

There are many ways in which i will market the magazine, i will advertise via social media as this is where i will be able to reach the most clientele, however to start off with i will advertise on bus stop billboards in areas in North London as i believe that to be a significant way to reach the geodemographic, which will attract via bright colours and flashy coverlines. Social media is an easy way to advertise the magazine as i would make pop up ads on Instagram and Facebook feeds as well as TikTok as these platforms reach an extremely large amount of people and potential readers, however i will begin to do that as the magazine grows and it becomes national- to begin with i will discover local North London reader group chats to achieve the attention of the older half of the target audience.

How did you decipher your budget?

My budget is roughly £3,700 per edition, i came up with this budget by undertaking in depth research about how much the resources and personnel would be and broke everything down separately as well as locating the most affordable options as this magazine is independent, therefore i would rather the editions not be too expensive that they are unrealistic. I believe this budget is an attainable budget and within it is everything the magazine will need to be made.

How did you come up with your target audience?

The genre of the magazine is Rom-com therefore when i took that into account i had to find out who would be the primary consumers and initially when i started the target was women from teenage years onwards however as my thoughts progressed i realised with the title of the magazine being 'LUST' i had to make the demographic more specialised therefore i will be taking that into consideration when advertising and marketing. The secondary target audience is men and anyone else interested as i will be marketing the magazine where both male and female can reach- i would not like to limit my readers as the rom-com genre is open to everyone, i just found that it is more popular within the demographic of women.
